BANGKOK: MOYA AND LÓPEZ FALL
Benjamin Becker and Ivo Karlovic knocked out the Spaniards Carlos Moya and Feliciano López in the first round of the Thailand Open.
After Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic withdrawals, the Thailand Open loses one of the star players of its draw: world no. 15 Carlos Moyá. The match seemed to be tough and in the same level after a tie-break taken by the German Becker. Thus, the result of the first set was 7-6 (5). After that, fifth-seed Carlos Moyá failed to convert two break-point opportunities and lost the second set 6-4, saying goodbye to his chances to qualify for the Masters Cup.
It was not the best day for the Spanish tennis because its countryman Feliciano López fell against Croatian Karlovic. Seventh-seeded Karlovic came through thanks to his great serving and starred 23 aces over the Spaniard. The world no. 48 has won 2 titles this season: Houston and Nottingham.
In the meanwhile, top-seeded player makes his debut today and try to forget he’s under a lot of pressure saying his opportunities to win the title “are as good as anybody’s”. “It’s a little bit too early to talk about winning now. I hope to win tomorrow first”, said the world no.5. He will face Yeu-Tzuoo Wang, of Taipei, while 8th-seeded Fernando Verdasco will meet the Swedish Johansson.
