UNEXPECTED ABSENCES

Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Marat Safin and Marcos Baghdatis are the players who won’t be able to play the tournaments due to their injuries.

Kingfisher Airlines Tennis Open and Thailand Open begin this week but top seed players won’t be competing for the prize. Star players of Mumbai’s tournament former world no.1 Safin and the Cypriot Baghdatis pulled out in order to recover from their injuries. “Baghdatis pulling out is not the best thing to happen but we are not really disappointed”, said Gaurav Natekar, Director of the tournament. “We still have players like Gasquet, Kiefer and Santoro and we are hopeful the fans would come to watch them”.

On the other hand, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic suddenly informed they wouldn’t be able to play in Bangkok. After Davis Cup matches, it seems that the Serbian need to rest, and his next tournament event to contest for will be in Vienna.
It was going to be his first time in the Thailand Open, but Rafa Nadal will have to wait unitl next year: his left-knee tendonitis injury does not let him to play in Bangkok. “I have sought medical advice and have been advised to rest my knees for at least another few weeks”, said the Spaniard. “I was very much looking forward to playing my first Thailand Open. Thailand is a beautiful country and I’ve heard so many good things about it”.

Former world no.1 Carlos Moyá and Feliciano López make their debut today in the afternoon in Bangkok. Top-seeded player after Nadal and Djokovic’s absences will be Andy Roddick.
