CHINA OPEN: DAVYDENKO OUT
Croatian teenager Marin Cilic, world No.117, sees off Davydenko, top-seeded in the tournament. The match turned into the surprise of the day. In the meanwhile, Ljubicic and Baghdatis are ready to fight for semifinals and Tommy Robredo qualifies for quarte
Croatian Marin Cilic beats a Top 10 player for the first time in his career. The 18-year-old got rid of world No.4 in 78 minutes and two sets victory (6-3, 6-4). After a three-hour delay because of the hard rain, the Croatian player broke Davydenko’s serve and he was never the same again. “I don't think it was because of the rain but I didn't play very well," said the 26-year-old. "I felt very well, I slept for 11 hours and I was fresh... today I just found it tough to hit the ball."
Nikolay Davydenko was playing his 26th tournament of the year and is looking to achieve some titles. Currently No.4 in the ATP Race 2007 has not won since ATP Masters Series Paris in November 2006, and last season by this time he had alredy achieved six crowns. Regarding to this topic, his Croatian foe said: “I prefer less tournaments with more quality time”.
Chances turned into a different way for the player from Catalonia, whose well-rounded way of playing made it possible for him to qualify for quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Thrid-seeded Tommy Robredo is looking to his sixth title in the year because he has not won since Sopot (Acasuso) last July. Next up for Robredo will be No.8 seed Igor Kunitsyn from Russia.
China Open’s quarterfinals will also round Ivan Ljubicic against Marcos Baghdatis and Korean Lee against Fernando Gonzalez.
