Federer broke Jenkins four times and saved two break points in the final game of the one hour and 32 minute match.
Federer, who has held No. 1 for 187 straight weeks (since Feb. 2, 2004), has the all-time mark for most consecutive weeks at No. 1 in pro tennis. He broke Steffi Graf's mark of 186 weeks from Aug. 17, 1987 to Mar. 10, 1991.
In other matches in Federer's quarter of the draw involving seeds, No. 9 Tomas Berdych beat Frenchman Marc Gicquel 6-3, 7-6(0), 6-2 and No. 13 Richard Gasquet (pictured) ousted Argentine Sergio Roitman 7-5, 6-1, 6-2, while No. 22 Paul-Henri Mathieu was outbattled in five sets by Spaniard Fernando Verdasco and No. 26 Jarkko Nieminen fell to American wild card John Isner.
Berdych, who comes into his first Grand Slam tournament ranked in the Top 10, has now reached the second round or better in 10 of his last 11 Slam appearances. He will take on Italian Simone Bolelli in round two.
Gasquet, who has advanced to the fourth round at the US Open the last two years, converted six of nine break points in his one hour and 38 minute victory. The No. 1 Frenchman will play American teenager Donald Young in the second round.
The 18-year-old Young posted his first Grand Slam match win (1-3) as he came back to defeat big-serving Aussie Chris Guccione 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. Young matched Guccione's nine aces and converted five of 12 break points while saving both break points he faced.
Fellow American up-and-comer Isner, playing in his first Grand Slam tournament and just his fifth ATP-level event, upset Nieminen 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-4 despite committing 70 unforced errors to the Finn's 23. The 22-year-old Isner fired 34 aces and secured the only break of serve in the fourth set of the 3 hr., 8 min. match.
