RETURNING TO THE CLAY COURT

www.atptennis.com Monfils served 11 aces and saved all three break points he faced in his straight-sets win over Robredo, who has now lost three consecutive matches. Monfils, who at No. 56 in the ATP Rankings is more than 30 places below his career-high mark of No. 23, next meets Vanek. Last week the Frenchman reached the quarterfinals of Gstaad before losing to eventual champion Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Left-handed Fernando Verdasco was the first Spaniard to advance to the second round Monday after he defeated German Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-2. Verdasco recently reached the fourth round of Roland Garros.
