Tipsarevic became the first player into the third round after the World No. 80 knocked out No. 22 seed Marat Safin 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 38 minutes.
Safin, who was making his ninth appearance at the second Grand Slam event of the year in Paris, lost to eventual champion Juan Carlos Ferrero in the 2002 semifinals. The 27-year-old Russian has a 24-9 record at the clay-court major.
Belgian Kristof Vliegen recorded his second career win over No. 11 seed Richard Gasquet 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-1 in two hours and 16 minutes to strike a blow to French fans.

Vliegen, who equals his career-best performance at a Grand Slam (3rd Round at 2006 Australian Open), will next meet No. 19 seed Guillermo Canas of Argentina.
Two-time former quarterfinalist Canas overcame Simone Bolelli of Italy 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and 15 minutes. Canas captured his seventh career ATP title at Costa do Sauipe (d. Ferrero) in February and also reached the Barcelona final (l. to Nadal) last month.
