www.openseatgodo.com Ferrer, who came into the tournament with a modest 3-4 career record in Barcelona, advanced to the Open Seat quarterfinals for the first time in five appearances. Ferrer, who improved to 21-8 on the season, claimed a rare 6-0, 6-0 win over American Paul Goldstein in his opening match. He next faces the winner of David Nalbandian and Carlos Moya as he continues his quest for a second title of the year (Auckland). Two-time defending Barcelona champion Rafael Nadal continues to serve up a storm at the Open Seat 2007, dropping just five points on serve in a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Thomas Johansson Thursday to reach the quarterfinals. Nadal, who conceded just four points on serve in his opening victory over Kristof Vliegen on Wednesday, extended his winning streak on clay to 69 matches. Nadal began the match by winning nine consecutive points on serve and ended by winning 14 consecutive points on serve. He has not faced a break point during the tournament. Johansson took the fight to the ATP World No. 2 in the second set, which remained on serve until the final game of the match. The 2002 Australian Open champion rallied from 0/40 in the fourth game of the set and in his next service game he saved two break points in an eight-deuce game. Johansson found some success in forcing Nadal to run wide to his forehand side but in the final game he let himself down with unforced errors. Throughout the match Nadal found success with his backhand passing shot when the Swede attacked the net. Nadal next plays Potito Starace. The Italian needed five match points in a dramatic second-set tie-break to defeat eighth-seed Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 6-4, 7-6. Starace, who has not dropped a set in three matches en route to the quarterfinals, saved one set point in the tie-break. He next faces the winner of top seed Rafael Nadal and Thomas Johansson. |
