Federer, Blake, Roddick, Haas Cruise Through in New York
Top seed and two-time defending champion Roger Federer of Switzerland came through his first test unscathed, as he dismissed Yeu Tzuoo Wang of Chinese Taipei 6-4, 6-1, 6-0
www.atptennis.com. The match represented the 25-year-old's first competition since his 55-match North American winning streak was broken in a second-round loss to Andy Murray at the CINCINNATIi ATP Masters Series event earlier this month.
Federer ripped 44 winners, compared to 18 unforced errors in his one hour and 40 minute match.
The World No. 1 is seeking to become the first player in history to win Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year three straight times. He has a 15-match winning streak at the Open, with his last loss coming in the fourth round three years ago (to Nalbandian).
The Swiss magician leads the ATP circuit with seven titles this year. Wednesday's victory lifted his 2006 record to 64-5 and his career mark at the US Open to 25-4. In the second round, he will face Tim Henman, who won his battle of the veteran Brits over Greg Rusedski 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-3.
Henman, 31, broke Rusedski, 32, four times, while holding his own serve all but once. Henman outdid Rusedski in winners 39-28 and committed only 11 unforced errors to Rusedski's 20. Henman increased his career advantage over 1997 US Open finalist Rusedski, to 8-2.
Henman has a record of 22-15 this year and a career mark of 20-11 at the US Open. He played Federer in the second round of Wimbledon too, losing in straight sets. Henman still has a 6-5 lifetime edge over Federer, though the Swiss tennis genius has taken their last four matches.
Fifth-seeded American James Blake beat Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-3, 7-5, 7-6(7). Blake overcame 48 unforced errors, blasting 41 winners to Monaco's 15. The 26-year-old American bettered his 2006 record to 41-19. He has a lifetime mark of 10-5 at the US Open. In the second round, Blake will meet Teimuraz Gabashvili.
