Baghdatis Upsets Hewitt, Reaches Semis

Marcos Baghdatis continues to play his best tennis at Grand Slam events as the 21-year-old Cypriot upset former champion and No.6 seed Lleyton Hewitt 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-2


The No.18 seed Baghdatis posted his first win at Wimbledon this year by defeating Alan Mackin 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-2 in the first round (during which Baghdatis received two medical time-outs). In today's match he fired 19 aces (6 for Hewitt) and hit 53 winners (29 for Hewitt) in the two-hour, 22-minute match.

Baghdatis holds a 25-12 record this season with almost half of those wins (12) coming at Grand Slam events. After a solid start in the season, reaching the final at the Australian Open and quarterfinals at Doha and ATP Masters Series Indian Wells, Baghdatis won only five matches in the next seven tournaments before reaching the semis at ’s-Hertogenbosch two weeks ago (l. Ancic). Against seeded players at majors he holds an 8-5 record.

En route to his semifinal appearence, Baghdatis defeated Mackin (as mentioned above) in the first round, Andrei Pavel 3-0 ret. (back injury) in the second round, No. 15 Sebastien Grosjean 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 in the third round, crowd favorite Andy Murray 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(2) in the round of 16 and Hewitt in today's quarterfinal match.

For a spot in the final, Baghdatis will take on the winner of Thursday's quarterfinal match between No.2 seed Rafael Nadal and No.22 seed Jarkko Nieminen.
