The final was cut short due to retirement from Mauresmo's opponent, Justine Henin-Hardenne, who was suffering from gastrointestinal illness and was forced to stop play trailing 6-1 2-0, 30-0. Mauresmo, ranked and seeded No.3, was in complete control of the match from the beginning, moving the No.8-seeded Henin-Hardenne around with angled crosscourt forehands and a mix of high topspin and slice on the backhand, drawing numerous short balls and unforced errors from the 23-year-old Belgian. The 26-year-old Frenchwoman was also finishing points at the net on several occasions en route to closing out the 33-minute first set and going up 1-0 in the second. "I really went out there on the court, I was ready for everything," Mauresmo said. "I didn't know how it was going to go. I just knew I had to focus on my game and try to have the emotion part of the moment really on the side, which I did very well. I was really controlling the game pretty well. I knew exactly what I had to do walking out on the court against Justine. And overall, I was pretty relaxed. So I think everything really came together for that first set." |
