Leading into the first round encounter, Henin-Hardenne was a little nervous; she knew that the match would receive a lot of attention. Her tactic to overcome her nerves was to just concentrate on her own game.

“I can say that I had to be focused, I had to be 100% from the first point, and I am very happy with the attitude I got,” said Henin-Hardenne. “I play with my experience and I’m very happy about that.”

Hingis was optimistic about the match outcome, viewing the experience as a stepping stone on her path to achieving greater results.

“I just need matches and to be patient,” she said. “That’s the only way how you learn. Either you progress or you don’t do it. But I know what I have to work on now.”
