Madrid, October 16th, 2005 – Carlos Moyá, Feliciano López, Albert Costa, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Fernando Verdasco are the five Spaniards who will play in the first round Masters Series Madrid, which will take place between Monday and Tuesday. None of them will meet on the court during the first round, but the draw has capriciously prepared two possible duels for the second round. Should Moyá defeat Filippo Volandri in the first match, he will play against Robredo in the next round. Close to them in the draw, Rafa Nadal, the number one seed, plays for the first time on Wednesday against Victor Hanescu or a qualy. If he wins, he would need to wait for Robredo or Moyá (should his debut be a victory) in the round before quarter-finals. The other would-be duel in the second round is David Ferrer (11th seed) vs. Albert Costa, who will play his first match against a qualifier. In this same fourth of the draw we find Feliciano López, who will face the dangerous Sebastien Grosjean, and Juan Carlos Ferrero, who will play against Belorussia’s Max Mirnyi in a match that can start warming the atmosphere up towards the first qualifying round of the 2006 Davis Cup. Mariano Puerta, 6th seed, awaits them in the second round. Fernando Verdasco’s first match in the Masters Series Madrid will have France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu as an opponent. Madrid’s player is close to Chile’s Fernando González in the draw, as well as Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic and Mario Ancic, both really fit, and Guillermo Coria. Andy Roddick, second favourite, could face Greg Rusedski in the second round. This would be a duel between hard-hitters. In following rounds he would need to defeat Dominik Hrbaty, Thomas Johansson or David Nalbandian. |
