Madrid, October 15th, 2005 – Among all the activities provided by Masters Series Madrid that run parallel to tennis matches, a unique and new exhibition must be highlighted: under the title 'El Club de los grandes del tenis español', objects such as trophies, clothes and racquets that constitute landmarks in the careers of the best players in Spain’s tennis history are exhibited. From the dress worn by Pilar Barril in Wimbledon 1959 to the clothes worn by Rafa Nadal in his recent Roland Garros victory, people visiting the museum will be able to recall the success of Spanish players in the last decades. The oldest tennis enthusiasts will be thrilled at the sight of the racquet used by José Luis Arilla’s in the Davis Cup final between Spain and Australia in 1965 or the Roland Garros champion’s cup won by Andrés Gimeno in 1972. The brilliant decade of the nineties experienced by the Spanish tennis is materialized in the Roland Garros cups won by Sergi Bruguera in 1993 and 1994, the silver medal won by Jordi Arrese after the unforgettable final against Marc Rosset in Barcelona Olympic Games or the skirt that used by Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario in Roland Garros. During the 21st century, Spanish tennis players have continued achieving successes that might be recalled, amongst others, thanks to trophies such as the ATP number 1 received by Ferrero in the 2003 Masters Series Madrid, the champion Davis Cup trophy won by Spain in 2004 or the winning cups of Albert Costa in Roland Garros ’02 and Carlos Moyá in Conde Godó ’03. 'El Club de los grandes del tenis español' exhibits more objects that have conformed Spain’s tennis history, such as the program of the first Madrid Lawn Tennis international tournament played in 1906 (an unpublished document to date) or a tennis game registered by Mayor Walter Wingfield from 1874. 'El Club de los grandes del tenis español' has been possible thanks to the collaboration between the Spanish Tennis Federation and Masters Series Madrid. Nor would it have been possible without the collaboration of tennis players who have decided to share their memories with this tournament’s crowd. This unique and innovative activity is located in the Ground Floor of the Pavilion, Pabellón de Cristal and will be opened until Sunday 23rd. |
