Roger Federer, the world number one, has confirmed his participation at the Masters Series Madrid tournament. “It’s important for me”, said the 24 year-old Swiss, who couldn’t play in Spain last year due to an injury. “I’m very fit and I think I’m going to play well”, has warned Federer. “I liked the atmosphere of the tournament since I came here for the first time”. Madrid spectators would surely enjoy a final match between the world number one and Rafa Nadal. “It would be great. I remember having played against Feliciano and Ferrero two years ago. The atmosphere in the court was very special”. Federer owns this season an unbelievable record of 77 wins and only 3 defeats. He hasn’t lost a match since Roland Garros semifinals against Nadal. Since then he has won five tournaments with a winning streak of 31 matches. “At the beginning of the year my main goal was to keep the number one crown. I have already done it and I feel happy about that”. The winner of six Grand Slams is seen by a lot of people as the best tennis player in the history. “It’s nice to hear that, but we shouldn’t forget what other players have done in the past years, like Sampras. The comparison with them is difficult, but if I continue playing like this, I will be among the best ones”. Federer also talked about other things, like the Hugo Boss model ballgirls: “I don’t know what they did last year, because I wasn’t in Madrid. Did they do a good job? If they did, I have no problems with that”. The Swiss player has played twice in Madrid. In 2002 he reached the quarterfinals and in 2003 he moved one step ahead to reach the semifinals, where he lost to Juan Carlos Ferrero. Now he’s the main favourite to win the title, which would be his fifth Masters Series of the year (Indian Wells, Miami, Hamburg and Cincinnati). |
