Model ballgirls take training for on-court return to Madrid

The Hugo Boss Girls are preparing conscientiously for the Masters Series Madrid '05

Madrid (dpa) - Organisers insist that their latest intake of leggy lovelies have been undergoing athletic and physical training to better prepare them for their evenings on court in the spotlight at the Madrid Arena.

The television-friendly gesture worked nicely -and no player complaints were noted either- as the teenaged-and-up talents grabbed and shunted balls as well as any young child had ever done, and all while wearing a sponsor's slit skirt and tight top.

The glamour touch went down well enough and certainly drew attention to the tournament, penultimate of the season at the elite Masters level.

The lithe Latins took heat a year ago from Spain's minister for equality, and the Madrid mayor. But the ladies went down a treat with the likes of Russian playboy Marat Safin and the happily married Andre Agassi.

During the 2004 trophy ceremony at the event won by Safin, the Russian sprayed the nearby models with champagne, sealing the popular success of the venture.

The around 30 girls selected have passed three castings to be chosen as a ball girl in the Masters Series Madrid. Some of them have repeated the experience from last year. The models will participate in eight matches of the tournament: one of the prior phase and the others each day from Monday 17th up to Sunday 23rd of October, these ones will be broadcasted by Television Española.

In the rest of the matches (it will be disputed a total of 81 along the 9 days of the tournament) 64 children will participate as ball girls and boys.

The past month of July the children that went to the Sports Center Manolo Santana, in Boadilla del Monte, received a short training that put in practice in the decisive matches of the Prior Phase tournament of the Masters Series Madrid. The best kids have been selected to be part of the team of ball girls and boys of the tournament.
