NADAL AND FERRER ADVANCE

www.atptennis.com Newly-crowned World No. 1 Rafael Nadal defeated German qualifier Bjorn Phau at the US Open on Monday. The five-time Grand Slam tournament champ triumphed 7-6(4), 6-3, 7-6(4) in two hours and 59 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 22-year-old Nadal hit seven aces, committed 35 unforced errors and won 26 of 34 net approaches. The Spaniard improved to 71-8 on the season (37-7 on hard courts) highlighted by eight titles including Roland Garros, Wimbledon titles and an Olympic gold medal. Nadal was ranked World No. 2 for a record 160 consecutive weeks until August 18.

Nadal is attempting to follow Rod Laver, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer as the fourth man to win three consecutive Grand Slam titles in the Open Era, as well as just the fifth man to win tree Grand Slam titles in a year. Nadal will next meet American qualifier Ryler DeHart, who defeated Belgian Olivier Rochus 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
