FEDERER WANTS A MEDAL

Swiss confirmed in Beijing capturing an Olympic medal will be his next purpose. His first rival will be Tursunov

www.atptennis.com Swiss Roger Federer (pictured), who celebrates his 27th birthday on Friday, will start his bid to capture an Olympic gold medal against Dmitry Tursunov of Russia in the first round while Spaniard Rafael Nadal will make his Olympic Games singles debut in Beijing against Potito Starace of Italy.

Federer, who will relinquish his World No. 1 ranking to Nadal on August 18, has competed at two Olympic Games at Sydney in 2000 (l. to di Pasquale in bronze medal play-off) and Athens in 2004 (l. to Berdych in 2nd RD). This year, Federer has won two ATP titles in Estoril and Halle and has a 44-11 match record.

Federer has avoided a potential third-round meeting with his Cincinnati conqueror, No. 14 seed Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, who is a late withdrawal due to injury. Federer could meet either American World No. 8 James Blake or No. 10 seed Gilles Simon of France, who beat Federer at ATP Masters Series Canada, in the quarterfinals.
